About our School

Welcome to Hackforth & Hornby Church of England Primary School
On behalf of the children, staff and governors, I would like to welcome you to Hackforth and Hornby CE Primary School.
We are a small, village church school set in a tranquil setting in beautiful North Yorkshire countryside near Catterick Garrison, Catterick Village, Leeming and Bedale, conveniently close to the A1 Service Road. We welcome children from both the villages of Hackforth and Hornby, as well an increasing number from surrounding villages and towns.
Our school is proud to have been at the heart of both Hackforth and Hornby villages since 1871. As a rural school in North Yorkshire, we provide an enviable environment for our children to learn in. In September 2021, we entered into a collaboration with the Federation of Snape Community and Thornton Watlass CE Primary Schools. This collaboration allows us to retain the advantages of being a small rural primary school, whilst benefitting from the advantages of being part of a bigger organisation.
There are two classes within our school: Caterpillars and Butterflies.
Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children are taught in Caterpillars, and Years 3 to 6 are taught in Butterflies. Both classes benefit from support from experienced Teaching Assistants.
Our curriculum offer includes a focus upon supporting our children to lead an active, healthy lifestyle and we enhance this provision through the use of a Sports Coach. We also recognise the wonder of the outdoors, utilising our outdoor areas for learning, including Forest School activities. We welcome in members of our local community, including local church representatives, as well as people from the wider community.
As a small school, we are very excited about all that we have to offer to the children and families who become part of our community. I am extremely proud to be Headteacher of our school family, knowing and valuing every individual child. Our team of staff and governors are friendly, caring and enthusiastic, working together to ensure that every child in our care is happy and experiences every opportunity to learn and to succeed during their time with us.
We are committed to providing a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment in which children feel confident, enjoy learning, and develop positive relationships with others. Our vision is for academic excellence whilst promoting the moral, cultural, spiritual, social and physical development of our pupils. Our Christian values permeate through our day to day school life. We strive to make our school welcoming, open and friendly with a positive ethos where the views of the children and parents are valued. We are fully inclusive and make every effort to ensure equality of opportunity for all our pupils.
We enjoy having the opportunity to work in collaboration with the Federation of Snape and Thornton Watlass Primary Schools. We enjoy and benefit from opportunities to share staff expertise, combined planning, staff training, school trips, sports teams and school resources to name just a few. This close cooperation brings enormous benefits for the children of all schools, as together we are far stronger than when we work in isolation. We are able to provide a broad and rich range of opportunities and experiences for our children.
We believe that this model of school partnership is the way forward into the future for small rural schools like ourselves.
We were proud to achieve a 'Good' judgement from Ofsted in November 2022; this is our fifth consecutive judgement of good. Ofsted recognised our school as 'a happy, caring school with a real family feel'.
Please do visit us to see what we have to offer; we are always happy to show you around. We look forward to meeting your child soon and to working in partnership with you in the future.
Jane Wood
Executive Headteacher
