Caterpillars

Welcome to Caterpillars!

Here, in Caterpillars, Mrs Johnson teaches Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 with the support of Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Mrs Green and Teaching Assistant, Ms Naylor.

We build strong foundations in a safe and stimulating environment, engaging our youngest learners. Interests are carefully followed and activities are enhanced regularly to ensure learning is personalised and supportive of our characteristics of learning.

In Caterpillars we are reminded of our classroom expectations with 3 words. We are caringcooperating and concentrating caterpillars.

We celebrate our individual talents, encourage one another to try our best and are always there to lend a helping hand and put a smile on someone’s face. We are excited to become more independent with our learning and be the best version of ourselves that we can be. Whether we are working hard in Maths or Religious Education, Music or English, we always strive to try our best and support each other.

PE

Please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school at all times. PE sessions take place on a Monday and Friday afternoon. Please ensure that hair which is long enough is tied back and that earrings are removed for PE days, as jewellery must not be worn for PE sessions for safety reasons.

Homework

Creative Homework:

Creative homework will be sent out each half-term. The children will have a list of creative homework tasks linked to their current topic to choose from. These homework tasks are designed to enhance and deepen your child’s learning. For each task completed, points will be earned; those who earn at least 15 points for the half-term will be awarded a Headteacher’s Star and also have their work shared with the class. Please support your child in completing these tasks to the best of their ability.

Reading:

We encourage a love for reading. Children will have a reading book which correlates to their phonics stage. They will read each book at school three times; one for decoding, one for prosody (reading with meaning, stress and intonation); and the final one for comprehension. Children are very keen to bring these books home to share with you so please encourage and support them with this. This should be recorded in their Reading Record which must be brought to school every day. Children are also encouraged to take books home from the school library to read or have someone read to them.

Number Facts:

Number Bots is a fantastic online resource which will help your child/ren understand, recall and become fluent in mental addition and subtraction, enabling them to move from counting to calculating. One Minute Maths is also a great resource for this. Please support your child in this crucial element of learning by encouraging them to practise regularly.

Spelling:

Spellings are covered in class on a Monday and will be assessed on a Friday from Year 1 upwards. Children will be sent home worksheets based on their weekly spellings each week which must be returned by a Friday. They can also practise their spellings via EdShed where weekly spelling rules will be set for your child. Please support your child/ren in learning their spellings and encourage them to practise in short bursts each day.

If you have any queries or concerns at any point, please do contact school.

Thanks for your support
